What classification is a rough terrain forklift?

According to the Industrial Trucking Association, a rough terrain forklift is a class seven forklift. This generally describes the extreme ground conditions the forklift was built to traverse. What are the two types of RT forklifts?

There are two types of RT forklifts.

The telehandler often called a variable reach forklift or zoom-boom is what is most often referred to when speaking about an RT forklift. This forklift has a boom section that lets you elevate and extend your load at great distances.

The other style of RT forklift is called the vertical mast rough terrain forklift. This forklift looks much more like a warehouse forklift, but with very noticeable large tires at the front.

Both forklift styles can carry heavy loads at much further distances than your average forklift.

Since telehandlers are the most common types of rough terrain forklifts, we will focus on them to keep things simple.

How do you drive a rough terrain forklift?

The forklift has a steering wheel in the operator cab. You steer the forklift by turning the wheel, just like a car. You can push your transmission forward, leave it in neutral, or pull it back into reverse. Your forklift will have a braking system and you can usually shift gears up or down depending on how much power you need to the wheels.

What are the main parts of a rough terrain forklift?

A rough terrain forklift has four main parts: the operator cab, telescopic boom section, forks, and the wheels and tires. All four of these areas must be well understood and skillfully used to efficiently and safely drive your RT forklift. Your RT forklift will get power from the engine or from the hydraulic system.

How often should an inspection be done on a rough terrain forklift?

As an operator, an inspection should be done on your rough terrain forklift every time you use it. A documented inspection should be done each day at the beginning of your shift. Always remember to keep that written record. A lot of companies use electronic inspection checklists that automatically file your inspections. However, If you use paper make sure there is a good filing system to keep track of your inspection. Over time, you will grow a running record of doing the right things with your forklift. What industries mainly use rough terrain forklifts?

For the most part, you will find telehandler forklifts at a construction site or at a heavy industry site like oil and gas or forestry. They are also commonly used for lifting containers in rail yards and ports. This is not exhaustive though. You can find these machines in many places you might not first think. If you need to lift a very heavy load or need to lift your load at a distance that requires extending and elevating one of these will usually be close by.

On average you can expect to make $20 – $28 per hour. This will depend on a few factors. Some of these factors are your experience, your company, the local job market, and the season.

There are several brands of rough terrain forklifts. The most recognized brands are Caterpillar, JLG, Genie, JCB, GEHL, Zooboom. There are many! The most important thing as an operator is to be familiar with the forklift that you are using. If you have not used a forklift before, drive to a safe location and test all the controls. Before you buy an RT forklift I would suggest doing some thorough research online and renting the make and model before you buy it to make sure it is a good fit. Also, make sure the inspections are up to date and any structural issues are addressed before you sign on the dotted line.

Why do you need RT forklift training?

A rough terrain forklift can be a complicated piece of equipment. There are a lot of controls and safety mechanisms you need to know and understand. When one of these goes down, everyone hears it and sees it. Because they handle such heavyweights at great distances when there is an accident a lot more damage can be done. You need to know how to keep the machine from tipping over. That will be your greatest skill as an operator for your safety and the safety of others.
